What’s Beneath Us? Learn About The Mysteries That Hide These 7 Underground Cities Of The World

There are many underground cities around the world and plenty of history of a life that once was and activities few people ever heard about surrounding their passageways, ancient tunnels, and urban legends.

Back in the day, many reasons could have driven people underground, as to war, natural disasters, weather, lack of space on the surface and others and while the cities were built for different purposes before,  most of them are now fully functional urban spaces. Check out these 7 amazing underground cities around the world and learn some interesting facts.

1. Shanghai Tunnels, Portland, United States

Portland has its own underground city known as the Shanghai Tunnels, also known as the Portland Underground. Supposedly it once consisted of tunnel passageways linking Portland’s Old Town (Chinatown), to the central Downtown area.

Back in the day,  many downtown bars and hotels had their basements linked to the Willamette River waterfront so ships could unload the goods directly to the basements for storage and as a way to avoid rain and heavy traffic.

There are rumors that the tunnels had also been used for the practice of ‘shanghaiing’, which means kidnapping people for them to serve as sailors.

Nowadays, you can actually take a secure walking tour and explore a a portion of the Shanghai Tunnels.

2. Underground Cherkizovsky Market Town, Moscow, Russia

This may not be considered completely as such but in 2013 a police raid found hundreds of migrant workers in an ‘underground town’ in Moscow.

More than 200 people were hidden beneath the capital’s Cherkizovsky Market. The police discovered a subterranean factory containing work rooms filled with sewing machines, along with living quarters, a cafe, a cinema, a casino, and a chicken coop.

An explanation for this was that the Cherkizovsky Market -also known as Cherkizon- was the largest marketplace in Izmaylovo District, Moscow, but after authorities closed it down in 2009 due to numerous forbidden activities. Many workers moved under the streets of Moscow where they continued to live and operate their businesses.

3. Edinburgh Vaults, Edinburgh, United Kingdom

The Edinburgh Vaults, also called the South Bridge Vaults, are a series of chambers formed within the 19 arches of South Bridge. The vaults were opened back in 1788 to house taverns, cobblers, cutlers, smelters and other tradesmen, but also to store forbidden materials.

It is rumor that serial killers such as Burke and Hare used to store various bodies down there and sold them for medical experiments. As businesses started to move out and the vaults became home to the city’s poorest souls.

Nowadays, the wet chambers give off a feel of ghastliness but you can actually visit them and listen to the guide’s shivering stories of the ghosts still lingering around.

4. Wieliczka Salt Mine, Krakow, Poland

Just over 9 miles outside of Krakow, the Wieliczka Salt Mine was built back in the 13th century and had produced table salt continuously until 2007. It has other names like the Underground Salt Cathedral of Poland or the Royal Salt Mine.

The mine was used for Nazis as a munitions factory and from being a series of dark caves, this underground salt city evolved to a complex labyrinth featuring over 185 miles of galleries, about 3000 chambers, 9 floors, surrounded by lots of chandeliers, a large numbers of statues and an entire cathedral, all made from rock salt. In fact, the first three floors are open to the public.

There are a lot of guided tour options, you can get to know the history of the salt mine in the Miners’ Tour or if you want to learn more about the religious aspects, the Pilgrims’ Tour includes a visit to the salt statue of John Paul II and a Holy Mass at the end.

5.     Derinkuyu, Turkey

Back in the day, the city was known as Malakopea and Christians used to hid there from Arab invaders. Later, Derinkuyu’s residents moved underground to escape invaders in Byzantine times as the Roman Empire was collapsing.

So nowadays Derinkuyu is a popular tourist attraction located down to 85 feet deep and the largest and best known of nearly 200 underground cities in Turkey’s Nevsehir Province.

6.     Leavenworth, Kansas, USA

Beneath the streets of this small Kansas town, there are tunnels and vaults that stretch under downtown Leavenworth and connect several of the town’s buildings. Yet it is full of mystery since nobody knows who built the underground city or as to why, though it can be accessed through several points.

It is said that the tunnels may have served as hiding places before the Civil War or during the war itself. Another possibility is that the tunnels were built to hide and move liquor back in the day when alcohol was not permitted yet in the United States as some of the tunnels lead to breweries.

7.     Coober Pedy, South Australia

It’s a small town often referred to as the “opal capital of the world” because of the quantity of precious opals that are mined there.

It’s considered as an underground city because many of the residents live in two or three-bedroom caves called dugouts due to the high temperatures in the region that frequently exceeds 40 °C in the summer. In fact, it’s usually so hot that golfers at the town only play at night using glow in the dark balls.

The inhabitants have many underground facilities as well, from shops and churches to an underground graveyard.

The Real Story Of Gargamel From The Smurfs

During our childhood, we watched hundreds of cartoons that touched us and one of them undoubtedly had to be The Smurfs, the story of those little blue beings constantly chased by the grumpy Gargamel and his cat Azrael. He would always devise any plan in order to destroy them.

Even though, we used to think that Gargamel was an evil sorcerer in the cartoon,  you might be surprised to know that in reality this was different. There’s an obvious reason as to why he used to insist on ending with the Smurfs and this is because, beyond being good and friendly, our little blue beings are linked with the Devil and all his evilness.

The true story of Gargamel dates since the 12th or 13th century. He was a well-known priest who became part of the Dominican order and got in charge of carrying out the inquisition in ancient Europe.

Gargamel was born in a small town in Spain and came from a very poor family. He was abandoned at the age of four by his own mother, since she didn’t have the financial solvency to take care of him. She laid him on a basket at the entrance of a convent and when he was found by the religious men, he got adopted by.

Time passed by and when he grew up, he became a priest of the convent and swore to protect his sacred home from any entity or being that tried to do evil to them while helping those most in need.

Over the years, all the men who took care of Gargamel from his childhood started to pass away until he finally ended up alone in that huge and almost ruined place.

The sadness caused by being alone, made him being on the verge of becoming insane. However, he started to feel better when he met the one who would be his new companion for life, a small cat that was wandering around the place looking for food. Gargamel adopted and called him Azrael. He and his little feline ended up being inseparable until the end of their days.

He managed to get ahead and all his daily experiences were narrated in his book. At the end, this great and noble character was the inspiration for different comics, and of course, cartoons like The Smurfs.

The curious thing is that in this cartoon, Gargamel is still a priest but introduced as a grumpy old man who lives inside a church along his faithful cat Azrael to hunt the little bluish-creatures.

Azrael comes from the name Israel, which means ‘God’s chosen people’.  Although some others associate the name with ‘The Angel of Death’ and his mission is to help Gargamel destroy any evildoing and among those, the Smurfs who are the 7 deadly sins and it’s very clear which one represents each: Grouchy Smurf (Wrath), Greedy Smurf (Gluttony), Vanity Smurf (Pride), Hefty Smurf (Envy), Brainy Smurf (Greed), Lazy Smurf (Sloth) and Smurfette (Lust).

An interesting fact is that the family leader, Papa Smurf, is the only member in red attire, which is why he is considered as the Devil.

Despite the friendly image of the Smurfs, there’s a dark background behind, as they supposedly are malignous spirits from the forest that will bring evil to humanity and so Gargamel’s duty is to protect the world from these demonic entities and thus throughout the chapters, he persists on catching them.

On full moon days, the Smurfs used to performed rituals and spells to create a new being like themselves and only through that moon phase they could be able to steal children’s souls.

So next time you watch one of the chapters, remember to not hate Gargamel, as he only tries to defend the world from the evilness.

Did you know Gargamel wasn’t that bad of a person?

Jeepers Creepers Existed! The Real Story Of The Movie Is Horrible

Sometimes reality is stranger than fiction. Learn about the true story that inspired Jeepers Creepers, one of the most disturbing horror films out there.

Jeepers Creepers film

Jeepers Creepers is one of the most scary movies in horror cinema. The main character is a demon whose face is similar to a snake and wakes up every 23 years. He haunts human beings whom he chooses by their smell.

When the demon perceives a smell he likes, he won’t stop himself and eat eyes to see, ears to hear, lungs to breathe. This demon becomes immortal during his feeding period which last 23 days and everything he eats will become part of him.

The true story

A married couple used to live in the county of Michigan in 1990.  Dennis DePue was an ordinary man who loved his kindful wife. But she wasn’t that happy and after asking for a divorce, Dennis lost his mind so he took the life of his beloved wife as an act of revenge and then dumped her remains at the back of an abandoned school.

In the Jeepers Creepers film, the demon can be seen throwing the bodies of the victims behind a ruined church. There’s also a very creepy scene in the movie in which two brothers observed what the mysterious demon was doing and when he noticed them, the demon went after them.

In real life, two brothers who were road traveling, noticed how Dennis DePue was throwing his wife’s body, but weren’t cautious enough for the man not to notice them. Dennis was furious and began to go after them for several miles.

The police got involved and managed to catch him. But days later, Dennis took his life after famous television show called “Unsolved Mysteries” chose his case, remaking scenes for one of the episodes.

Ten years later, the movie Jeepers Creepers was released and used same dialogues made by the show. They even used the same scenes where the license plates of the vehicle on the road were shown. This was with the intention to give credits to the show, although director Víctor Salva never gave them openly.

No doubt, creatures, ghosts or demons that are shown in horror movies are nothing compared to the brutality that exists in real life.

The Curse of ‘The Crying Boy’ Paintings

Read about one of the scariest stories of all time, the meaning behind ‘The Crying Boy’ paintings.

There’s a story regarding the artworks known as ‘The Crying Boy’. Despite giving this nostalgic and a little creep feeling, they were so successful during the 70s and 80s and were distributed around the world.

Who were the crying boys?

Many families decorated their houses with these paintings, however they had no idea of what was behind those crying boys. It is said that these boys portrayed actually lived in orphanages or charities during the time of Second World War, that’s the reason as to why they look like suffering.

The story of the crying boys

Legend has it that the painter of these artworks known as Giovanni Bragolin, sold his soul to the Devil to guarantee the sucess of his paintings. In exchange for this pact, his work would be cursed and cause disgrace to whoever placed any of his paintings or replicas at home.

The first incident occurred in an orphanage, where Giovanni had painted one of the children and later introduced the painting to the institution. Some time later,  a fire devastated the orphanage and those who used to live there lost their lives, including the boy he painted. The most horrible thing about this tragedy was, the painting was found beneath the ashes but was completely intact and that now it carries the spirit of the child.

Between the 70s and 80s, a lot misfortunes related to these paintings began to emerge. Many tragedies started to happen in some different ways, from bad luck to death. In most cases, fires would consume houses and those who lived in them and the paintings would always remained intact from the fire as evidence.

Witnesses who have survived mentioned that paranormal activity began once they bought the paintings. The sound of wailing or laughing could be heard at nights and also the feeling of being observed by the portrayed boys anytime someone would pass in front of them.

One of the most heartbreaking testimonies was from a woman named Rose Farrington, who reported losing her three children and husband after one of the paintings.

Too many people were affected by them. Newspaper “The Sun” even asked all readers to send them any painting they had so they could be burned under the supervision of firefighters.

Pact with the Devil

Another odd story about these cursed paintings is that if you stare firmly into the eyes of the crying boys, you can make a pact with the Devil…

Head Curator Of ‘The Warren Occult Museum’ Introduces Ed And Lorraine Warren’s Daughter On Youtube

Most of us have watched  “The Conjuring”, starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, who have been part of some of the most frightening paranormal cases in history.

In ‘The Conjuring Universe’, Judy Warren is also played in the movies but until “Annabelle: Comes Home”, the girl had a major role as she was the main victim of the diabolic doll.

The Warren are well-known and there’s a lot of information about them however, anything related to Judy is barely know.  This is why her husband Tony Spera, who is also a paranormal investigator and head curator of the Warren Occult Museum -which is now closed- decided to give fans an instant view of his wife.

At the Official Ed and Lorraine Warren Channel on Youtube, Tony finally decided to introduce his “sidekick” since everyone was curious and asking of her as she hadn’t appeared in any video published before.

The video posted on August 17th, 2020, shows Judy saying hi to the camera while Tony mentioned to everyone who didn’t know about her that she’s Ed and Lorraine Warren’s daughter.

This is my wonderful wife, we’ve been married for 34 years since May 17th, 1986… but I met her in 1979 and so, we’ve been together like, well over 40 years, right? 41 or something,” said Spera while looking to Judy for assurance.

Yeah, and I’m barely that old,” Judy laughed it off.

They joked about it as Tony proceeds to mention they are inside Ed and Lorraine’s house while explaining what they were doing at their inherited house, “We are here to feed the cats, give some medication to one of the cats too”.

Moreover, Tony thanks their supporters while promising to bring Judy to be part of future videos.

I just wanted to thank all you guys for being loyal supporters and loyal youtubers and we’ll be talking to you again, I’ll try to get Judy out again and when we’re talking about other things, maybe she can give you some information too

They say one last goodbye to their fans before ending the video. We can only hope to watch future content at the Youtube channel featuring Judy to get to know her a little more and about her experiences as The Warren’s daughter.

Have You Ever Had Psychic Dreams?

Dreaming has always aroused the curiosity of scientists and by studying it, we have learned that dreams are the representation of our unconscious part. If we don’t sleep, we could not be able to comprehend or even learn. Also, if we don’t get that time for resting, we could also go crazy. However, there are many records that dreams can be more than a reflection of a person’s unconscious that show or connect us to something else. Some of them are quite common and you could have experienced one without even realizing it. They are known as psychic dreams.

Types of dreams

Psychic dreams

They are simply known as psychic dreams. It’s a kind of connection with another person that can only be reached by dreaming, like a parapsychological experience. An example could be when you dream of someone close to you who is in poor health or going through an emergency. When you wake up and later you check how that person is doing,  it turns out that he or she was actually going through something similar to your dream.

This is attributed to having a certain psychic ability to communicate with the consciousness of other people. The most common cases can be when you dream of someone and that someone dreams of you too.

Clairvoyant dreams

People who experience them tend to attribute these dreams to coincidences, but clairvoyant dreams can show us places that we will know before visiting them, events that we will carry out or even conversations that we have not yet had.

Besides from this, those with a psychic ability can experience full control of their dreams, that is, knowing that they are in a dream and doing what they want while asleep. It has also been said that through these dreams, people can talk and contact dead people.

Premonition Dreams

It may seem the same as clairvoyant dreams, but they are different. For being the ones closest to experiences and sensations, these dreams are about very specific events that are about to happen. To give an example, one of the most famous cases of these type was by Monsignor Joseph Lanyi’s dream about the death of Archduke Francis of Austria in 1914.

According to the tales, Joseph dreamt one night that he would arrive at his office in the morning to find a letter on his desk. It would be from the archduke and in it, he’d warned him that his life would be taken by a fanatic. He woke up very shocked and hours later, the archduke and his wife would be deprived of their lives in a parade. Just as it had happened in his dream.

Despite the fact that science hasn’t been able to explain these dream phenomena, it’s true that many of us have experienced these types of dreams at least once, so there must be something else in our minds that we still haven’t figure out yet.

Have you ever had psychic dreams?

The Conjuring 3 Release Date Gets Delayed? What We Know So Far

If you are a horror lover, you most likely have watched the entire The Conjuring Universe and you are definitely ready to watch The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It soon. So here are everything we know about the upcoming movie before its release.

Also known as The Conjuring 3, it’s a supernatural horror film that will serve as a sequel to 2013’s The Conjuring and 2016’s The Conjuring 2, and as the eighth installment overall in the Conjuring Universe franchise.

The premise is based on the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, also known as the “Devil Made Me Do It” case. This is one of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with the story of David Glatzel, a young boy was possessed by a demon so the family summoned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren to assist him.

After performing exorcism on David, it is said that a demon fled the child’s body and took up residence within Johnson who later would remove the life of his landlord. His case marked the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense.

As for some of the main cast, Ruairi O’Connor will be playing Arne Cheyenne Johnson, Sarah Catherine Hook as Debbie Glatzel, Julian Hilliard as David Glatzel, and of course, Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will come back as paranormal researchers Lorraine and Ed Warren.

Director Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona, 2019) was welcomed to work on this project after James Wan, who directed the previous two movies, stated that he wouldn’t be able to direct the film due to his commitments to other projects. However, Wan remained closely involved as producer.

According to THR Wan expressed in a statement about Chaves joining The Conjuring Universe, “While working closely with Chaves on ‘The Curse of La Llorona,’ I got to know him as a filmmaker. Chaves’ ability to bring emotion to a story, and his understanding of mood and scares, make him a perfect fit to direct the next Conjuring film. […] I’m excited to be back as producer and continue with Vera and Patrick on the next supernatural adventure of the Warrens.”

On the other hand, Chaves once expressed, “I am a huge fan of the Conjuring films. The movies are the rare combination that delivers both tremendous heart and awesome scares. It is both a total thrill and absolute honor to be working with James and the gang at New Line again”.

Release date

The film will be distributed by Warner Bros Pictures and New Line Cinema and while it is scheduled to premiere next September 11th, according to Variety, the horror film was delayed to June 4th, 2021 due to the spreading of coronavirus outbreak.

Most movie and television projects that were scheduled through this year, has been stopped or postponed since the global pandemic situation has brought the entire entertainment industry to a standstill.

While most sources are still counting on the movie to be released next month, it doesn’t even have an official trailer yet. So whether the release may actually get delayed -as reported- or not, the only thing to do is to wait for more information about its premiere.

And do you already want to watch it?
