Archive 81: Netflix To Adapt A Podcast As New Horror Series With James Wan

James Wan is recognized, above all, for his horror works such as The Conjuring and Insidious, and now he’ll be working with Netflix to launch “Archive 81”, a new original horror series based on a famous podcast with stories about found footage .

The first season of Archive 81 will have eight episodes and will tell the story of Dan Turner, who gets a mysterious new job to restore an old damaged collection of 1994 videotapes.

As he does so, he will meet Melody Pendras, a documentary filmmaker who has been investigating for years a very dangerous cult and is putting her life in danger. As Dan progresses in his work and fully immerses himself in Melody’s story, he becomes more and more convinced that he can save her from the terrible ending he encountered 25 years ago.

Mamoudou Athie (The Detour) and Dina Shihabi (Altered Carbon) will lead the cast of the series that will also be produced by Marc Sollinger and Daniel Powell, the creators of the original podcast.

Rebecca Thomas (“Stranger Things”) will direct four of the eight episodes of the season while Rebecca Sonnenshine (The Boys),  will act as showrunner of the series.

“With Archive 81, we’re hoping to give the supernatural horror genre a new twist—while keeping a dark, deeply emotional romance as its core,” Sonnenshine said in a press release. “Alongside the talented Mamoudou Athie and Dina Shihabi, and visionary partners Atomic Monster and Rebecca Thomas, I’m excited to take Netflix viewers on a terrifying and visually thrilling adventure.”

Some suggests that the production for Archive 81 is currently planned to start in Pittsburgh, US, in the fall of 2020.

No release date for Archive 81 has been announced yet but it would be now safe to assume that the eight episodes will be dropped on Netflix sometime in 2021.
