New Horror Series Inspired On H.P. Lovecraft’s Legacy Just Debuted

A few days ago, a new drama horror television series premiered on HBO. It has all the right elements to get into a gloomy atmosphere of the 50s. The series is inspired on famous horror writer H. P. Lovecraft.

The series titled “Lovecraft Country”, was developed by Misha Green (“Sons of Anarchy”). It counted with Jordan Peele (“Get Out”) and J.J Abrams (“Lost”) as the producers and it’s based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Matt Ruff.

The story is about a young black man named Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) who travels with his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) and childhood friend Letitia “Leti” Lewis (Jurnee Smollett) across the segregated 1950s United States in search of his missing father Montrose (Michael K. Williams), who has gone missing. They go looking for him while also learning of dark secrets plaguing a whole town, in which famous writer Lovecraft supposedly based the location of many of his fictional tales.

It may only debuted, but the 10-episode series is already a huge success. The audience’s response was favorable. Just in Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds an approval rating of 97% based on 58 reviews and 81% in average audience score.

In addition, it became a topic of conversation on social media due to the fiction being mixed with real and important topics that we still live up until today. Audience can see through the racism combined with the fantastical creatures and monsters.

Critics have also praised the production as impressive thanks to the contrast between the monsters, the fictional terror and also the constant fear from daily life. It’s expected that the next episodes can bring into even more audience.

Like many other HBO series,Lovecraft Country” premieres one episode a week, lengthening the mystery and tension but hooking horror fans since the beginning and leaving them wanting for more.

The legacy: weird fiction

Not many may be familiar to H. P. Lovecraft’s works, but he transformed horror genre at his time and managed to mark popular culture, cinema, literature and many other things. So it is logical that a team led by Peele, Green and Abrams, ended up giving HBO a great work of success.

While Lovecraft left a legacy and was the pioneer for the “weird fiction”(which either avoids or reinterprets ghosts, vampires, werewolves, and other traditional antagonists of supernatural horror fiction), his racist, xenophobic and antisemitic views cannot be denied.

That’s why that on the series, the fantasy and horror are well-played, but there’s also a better understanding of Lovecraft’s works and even further than that.

So all the elements are already in place to enjoy “Lovecraft Country” through HBO, so we must not lose sight of this series that promises to be, as impressive to read between the lines, as visually surprising.

Ryan Murphy’s New Horror Series ‘Ratched’ Hits Netflix In September

Sarah Paulson has been well-known by her amazing performances on American Horror Story and now she’ll be back at it with Ratched.

This new horror series coming to Netflix this Fall. It works as a prequel for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which was starred by Jack Nicholson in 1975.

Murphy and Romansky’s Netflix series Ratched, explores the story of Mildred Ratched in her early days as a nurse, 20 years prior to the events of the book and classic film. She arrives in California in the 1940s until she became the head nurse of the psychiatric hospital where unsettling experiments are practiced on the human mind.

Ratched appears to be how a dedicated nurse should be, someone who is gentle and takes care of everyone. She tries to show herself as a perfect person but deep down is capable of committing the most gruesome crimes.

In an interview with Vanity Fair about Ratched’s character, Murphy said,  “I feel like Nurse Ratched is sort of a shorthand for barbarism. She became almost like a catchphrase for any sort of institutional abuse of power. What was interesting was trying to create an emotional character from a reputation that’s very cold…trying to figure out every little detail about her childhood, her relationships, her sexuality. Because when people think of Ratched, they think of her as shutoff and cruel and uncaring.”

Paulson also stated, “I identified very deeply with her loneliness. I think ultimately at the end of the day, that is sort of what drives Mildred. “A pursuit of survival and of finding some sense of home. Even though the methods that she chooses to achieve that internal security are somewhat questionable, I would argue that she’s doing them with a potentially selfish need, but a survival need nevertheless. Sort of an animal need that blinds her to the inappropriateness of some her actions.”

Ratched will consist of 8 episodes and it’ll be premiering on Netflix next September 18th.

Second Season Has Been Confirmed

While the series are yet to come to the streaming plataform, a second season has already been confirmed. Back in 2017, Murphy sign with Netflix to bring a long list of upcoming shows, among the 11 projects, Ratched was granted a two-season order.

Besides Paulson, there’s a great cast composed by stars Cynthia Nixon (Gwendolyn Briggs), Judy Davis (Nurse Betsy Bucket), Sharon Stone (Lenore Osgood), Jon Jon Briones (Dr. Richard Hanover), Finn Wittrock (Edmund Tolleson), Charlie Carver (Huck), Alice Englert (Dolly), Amanda Plummer (Louise), Corey Stoll (Charles Wainwright), Sophie Okonedo (Charlotte), and Vincent D’Onofrio (Gov. George Wilburn).

“By the time you get to the end of the first season, you will not wonder how and why Mildred became the way she did. You may question her actions, you may have judgment about it—but you will understand it. It will make sense to you.” Paulson added to Vanity Fair.

The series will show us Ratched most hideous side and also most vulnerable. We can expect lots of drama, action, suspense and moments full of terror that will make more than one to not sleep at night.

Here’s the trailer for the upcoming series!

Netflix Buys This Reddit Horror Story To Turned It Into An Adaptation

Here’s the perfect example that if you have a creative idea on mind, it is worth sharing it to the world. You never know when it’s going to be your time to shine. Just like what happened to the Query brothers. From being a little creepy story to become an upcoming adaptation for one of the largest entertainment companies in the world.

Netflix has made a seven-figure deal to adapt the short horror story My Wife and I Bought a Ranch, which was first published on Reddit’s r/NoSleep forum.

Author Matt Query published the six-part story back in February, getting a lot of recognition among readers ever since. Only in the first part of the story, it earned more than 3000 upvotes.

Harrison Query, his brother, will be writing the screenplay while Scott Glassgold and his Ground Control Entertainment are producing the upcoming adaptation.

21 Laps’ Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) & Dan Cohen (Stranger Things) and Atomic Monster’s James Wan (The Conjuring) & Michael Clear (The nun) are also in talks to produce the horror project.

The story follows Harry and Sasha, a couple who just bought their dream ranch in rural Idaho but soon discover that they are not alone in the mountains.

They meet their neighbors, who tells them that there’s an evil spirit in the valley and it manifests the same way at the beginning of each season. In order to keep the spirit out of the house, some steps should be followed. The violence and the tension keep growing after every ritual performed and the duel between the spirits and Harry turn personal.

Thereby,  “My Wife and I Bought a Ranch”, is the perfect proof that creative pursuits can be successful by posting them on Internet. Some stories that were shared just for fun are now turning into adaptations as well. So, don’t ever forget how much big companies are willing to pay for your work and turning it into a movie (or series).

The Haunting of Bly Manor: Plot, Cast, Release Date, and More

The Haunting of Hill House is an American anthology supernatural horror drama web television series which premiered on Netflix in 2018. Directed by Mike Flanagan, it became a massive success and since the first season left the audience asking for more, the creator decided to give them what they wanted, which is now one of the most anticipated series of 2020, The Haunting of Bly Manor.

All those characteristics that made its predecessor one of the greatest horror series on the streaming platform, will continue to be present in this second season but of course, with a different story and characters. Here’s what we know about the upcoming season:

Plot

The Haunting of Hill House was based in gothic horror novel by American author Shirley Jackson published in 1959. For Bly Manor though, it’ll be based on the 1898 horror novella The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. And the book is as creepy as the one used for Hill House.

The plot hasn’t been established yet but we can get an idea based on James’ horror novela. The Turn of the Screw tells the story of a governess in charge of two children in a Victorian mansion.

These kids have just experienced a traumatic situation as their former governess died under strange circumstances and who also had a turbulent relationship with another of the house workers. The new teacher, trying to understand what actually happened in the mansion, begins to hear voices and to see her predecessor and the servant.

While The Turn of the Screw will be used as the ‘backbone’ of this season, Flanagan confirmed they will also play with other stories by James such as The Jolly Corner and The Romance of Certain Old Clothes.

Cast

While The Haunting of Bly Manor will have new characters, it will also feature the return of several actors from the previous season. However, the narratives of the two series will not be connected. Among them, Victoria Pedretti (Nell Crain) as the governess, Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Luke Crain), Kate Siegel (Theo Crain), Henry Thomas (Hugh Crain) y Catherine Parker (Poppy Hill).

For the new faces, Rahul Kohli has joined Bly Manor together with T’Nia Miller, Amelia Eve, and young actors Amelie Smith and Benjamin Ainsworth have also been added to the cast.

Release date

Bly Manor is expected to be scarier than Hill House. Flanagan told Birth.Movies.Death, “We’re looking at all the ghost stories of Henry James as the jumping-off point for the season, so it very much is a whole new deal. It’s a cool way to expand on some of the things I loved about Season 1, but within the framework of a new story, without having to be restrained by the decisions we made last time. For Henry James fans, it’s going to be pretty wild, and for people who aren’t familiar with his work, it’s going to be unbelievably scary. I already think it’s much scarier than Season 1, so I’m very excited about it.

The production started back on September 30th, 2019 and it is expected to hit Netflix later this year.

Flanagan confirmed that the series continues with its scheduled premiere in 2020. The filming for Bly Manor was able to be completed before all productions were pushed back due to the pandemic and that his post-production team has been working to get the series ready virtually. Many believe that it will premiere in October just like they did with the first season in 2018.

“I don’t expect to be delayed one bit. We didn’t really miss a step. We’ve been jamming through [post-production]. It’s been going great. It’s definitely later this year. It’s not going to get kicked off until 2021 or anything.” Said Flanagan in a podcast interview.

While we still don’t have a release date yet, we are completely sure that The Haunting of Bly Manor will be every bit as frightening and smart as The Haunting of Hill House was.

Randonautica: The Most Dangerous App. Don’t Try It!

Nowadays, using apps have become an essential part of our lives, as they provide us tools to help us to communicate, shop, entertain and such. Of course, one must be careful of what to download because some apps may bring some disturbing outcomes.

This is the case of the “Randonautica” app. It shows you a random location (depending on the area where you are) so that you can explore it. Although it may sound fun, if you are not prepared enough, it’s be better not to do so. The purpose of the app is to meet places but it may take you to strange situations, to find disturbing objects or even encounter some type of paranormal manifestation.

When you open Randonautica, it will ask for permission to access to your current location. Once you authorized it, you must read the instructions for security matters.

Even the app itself warns about the riskiness of using Randonautica. It also advises to explore preferably in daylight and accompanied by someone. The app asks to not enter private properties and in the case to find yourself in an uncomfortable or dangerous situation, to leave the place immediately.

Randonautica uses a quantum random number generator to give you a set of coordinates for your local area. The idea is to encourage as mention before to explore around with a desired intention in mind of what you’d like to come across.

Before start, it provides three different options to give you locations. This will depend on what you have in mind, so it’s necessary that before choosing one, you must understand their functions.

The first one is called attractor, this means a place has the highest concentration of quantum dots and it may lead you to face weird situations.

The second is void. This is the opposite of an attractor. It means an area contains low quantum concentration. You could have some negative, awkward or disturbing experience.

The last one is anomaly. This is the stronger  pick of those two different options, so be careful and don’t take it lightly.

Once the option is chosen, you must think of something -this should be with a good intention as suggested by the app- and you’ll receive the coordinates of a location close to you.

It is important to choose wisely your intention because if it’s something bad, you could confront some scary or odd experience. Randonautica is only for those who are brave enough to face the unknown.

What’s so curious about this app is that it seems to predict the things that are going to happen according to what you thought of.

There are some creepy videos of explorations that some users have shared through social media. Especially in Tik Tok, where the #randonautchallenge went viral. It consists of filming the results of the exploration by those who are curious enough to do it.

While some experiences may be positive and fun, there are some that are not. Some people have been taken to abandoned places where some weird things happen and with no logical explanation. According to their experiences, cellphones starts to fail or vehicles get stuck. The most curious thing is that many claims to have seen the presence of owls which is the app’s logo.

But that’s not all. There are videos of unknown people staring at the users while they seem to be in a kind of trance. Also, smoke has been seen in the middle of nowhere, creepy figures, animals behaving strangely or cars chasing after them. In addition, finding peculiar objects such as dolls with gloomy appearances, creepy drawings or messages and even human remains…

The reason why these things happen is not certain, not even how the app works at all. Regardless, it’s best not to risk it. Because if something looks dangerous, it probably is. Your safety is more important than your curiosity.

Of course, if you still want to give it a try, don’t say we didn’t warn you…

7 Signs That A Spirit Is Trying To Communicate With You

Most movies have created a misconception that all spirits are evil, that they are only here to frighten us. The truth is that many of these entities are the exact opposite.

It may be a loved one who passed away. That person is still somhow dedicated to protect and care for you. It could be a spiritual guardian that was sent to look after and guide you. Unfortunately, due to our lack of knowledge or even our own skepticism, their messages are often overlooked or ignored.

So, here are 7 signs to recognize when a spirit wants to communicate with us:

1 – Pets at home start to act ‘weird’

Animals are able to observe anomalous activity thanks to their incredible senses. To see strange things beyond what we humans are able to experience. Our pet could be detecting a ghost or a spirit being around us and we wouldn’t even know.

That’s why you should pay attention if you notice that your dog is barking or whining for no reason, or if your cat suddenly starts running frantically around the room.

Also, you should analize your pet’s reactions. If your dog is wagging the tail and looks happy or excited, this may mean that spirits brought positive news. If your dog is all curled up and its tail is between its legs, that could mean something’s there that scared it.

2 – Your electronics randomly act up

Ghosts and spirits possess an incredibly high-vibration energy. While you may not feel this energy around you, your electronic devices will likely do.

Some good examples can be when radios and televisions change stations or channels without you doing it or some electronics turn on and off.

So if things like the above are constantly happening, they won’t stop until you address the situation. Also if you find anything that seems familiar like a particular song comes on all of a sudden or repeats during the day, someone might try to put him or herself on our mind. It may be a coincidence but also a sign.

3 – Room temperature changes

If the room temperature changes out of a sudden and without a logical explanation, this may be about something bigger.

There may be a cold breeze or the room temperature might suddenly drop without a window or door being open. This happens a lot when you are thinking or talking about someone who passed away and was special to you.

4 – Lights flicker or turn on and off

Just like what happens with electronics, spirits also can affect the lights of the house. This is of course a fairly well-known sign, as it is often seen in movies and television shows to refer about ghosts and entities.

Of course there may be a logical explanation such as an old light bulb that needs to be changed or related to a wiring problem in your house. However, this can also be a way for ghosts and spirits to get your attention.

5 – Shadows out the corner of your eye

While we don’t see entities appearing before us the way they are show in movies, you’d be surprised how common it actually is.

They show themselves as flashes of light, orbs or shadows that we see out  the corner of our eyes. We feel there’s something behind, but once we turn around, there won’t be nothing.

6 – Special scents or fragrances

Do you find yourself smelling the same fragrance over and over again with not explanation at all? Like there’s a floral scent when you are indoors but not near a door or window? This may be an attempt from a spirit to get your attention.

The souls of our love ones who already passed away, can also try with some familiar scents to tell you that they are around. Like your grandmother’s favorite perfume.

An example could be if you smell your father’s cologne any time you get out late from work, it could be a warning that you should stop working overtime and reconsider your priorities in life.

7 – Numbers sequences

Also known as ‘Master Numbers’ or ‘Angel Numbers’. The importance of some exact numbers appearing constantly in our daily life, has long been documented in numerology.

They can be anywhere, from addresses, phone numbers, license plates, watches and more. Repetitive numbers like 111 or 3333 can  be signs from a spirit.

Increasing number sequences like 1234 are said to be a sign of something positive while decreasing number sequences like 4321 are a warning of something negative.

Are you receiving the signs?

Anne Hathaway Looks Spooktacular on New Poster for The Witches Remake

Witches are real! That’s what the upcoming remake of The Witches promises as they will be coming next year on the big screen…

The Witches

It was announced last year that one of our favorite childhood scary movies was getting a reboot, which we couldn’t be more excited about, The Witches.

Based on the book of the same title by British writer Roald Dahl, the first adaptation movie tells us the story of Luke Eveshim, a young boy who goes on vacation in Norway with his grandmother Helga. She warns him about witches and how to recognize them as she recalls  her childhood friend Erica was victim of a evil witch and got cursed to live inside a painting for the rest of her life.

A convention of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children will be taking at the hotel, but in fact, it’s a coven full of horripilant witches. Their powerful leader known as the Grand High Witch is there to unveil her new master plan, a magic potion that turns children into mice so parent can exterminate them and do the witches’ dirty work for them.

Luke together with his new friend Bruno, will try to stop the witches even if they have to fight them as mice.

The film was released in 1990, the year when writer Roald Dahl passed away. And even though the movie wasn’t a massive success on the big screen, it sure gained a cult following throughout the years.

The Witches Remake

Now the remake is starring Oscar winner Anne Hathaway who will follow in the footsteps of Anjelica Huston to star in her role as the new Grand High Witch. Also, it is directed by Robert Zemeckis, known for films such as ‘Back to the Future’ (1985) and ‘Monster House’ (2006) working together with co-writer producer Guillermo del Toro, known for ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ (2006) and ‘Shape of Water’ (2017).

In the original movie, it had a different ending than Dahl’s children book. However, Zemeckis described the new film adaptation as being closer to the novel but only with a little twist. He told French website Allocine, “We’re going to set it in the Gothic South in the 1960s. It’s an exciting way to put a sociological spin on this kind of witch story.”

A supposed official movie poster was leaked on Reddit and has caused a lot of expectation as we also can see Octavia Spencer and Stanley Tucci with our new Grand High Witch.

The film was pretended to hit theaters on October of this year, as marked at the bottom of the poster, however due to the pandemic, the movie is now scheduled for 2021. The releasing date is yet to be decided.

Are you excited for the remake of The Witches?

You Won’t Believe The Chilling Stories Of These Ghost Ships With Unexplained Cases

The ocean is that last corner of the world that even today we have not been able to decipher or discover completely. In ancient times it was a place full of legends and myths, some of which have been uncovered thanks to modern scientists, but others remain unsolved.

Some of them are the terrifying ghost ships, missing ships that suddenly reappeared, with full supplies and in perfect condition, but without any crew…

Mary Celeste

31 meters long and almost 300 tons in weight, a brigantine that crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1872. When it was found, the ship was sailing at full speed, and despite being able to accommodate a large crew, when they boarded it they did not find a single soul.

Many theories pointed out that it could have been provoked by a pirate assault since the lifeboats were in place, however, there was something that made it all very mysterious: the food was served in the dining room.

And although you might think it might have been left there long ago, in a place like a ship that never stops moving and wobbling, how long could a bowl of soup have stood on the table? Without a doubt, one of the most inexplicable mysteries of the open sea.

The Octavius

The ship was returning from a transatlantic voyage to England when it was trapped by ice. Or at least that was what people believed since it had been given up for lost until in the year 1775, a whaling ship crossed the Octavius sailing aimlessly and they decided to board it.

When they did, the scene seemed unreal: the entire crew of the Octavius was there, but their bodies were frozen by the cold of the Arctic. The most frightening thing was to see the captain’s log, which was dated to the year 1762, which would result in a ship that had sailed aimlessly for 13 years with its lifeless crew.

Lady Lovibond

The sailboat departed in 1748 for Porto, Portugal, and the entire trip went smoothly until it reached the Goodwin Sands, an area of approximately 10 miles and which is full of fine sand, which when moving with the current creates changes in height affecting the boats.

They are so deadly that 2000 wrecks are known in the area. And even though the crew was experienced, there was something the captain could not foresee. One of his subordinates was in love with his wife, and anger over unrequited love led him to sabotage the rudder, causing the entire crew to perish in the quicksands.

Years later, another ship sailed across the sands again, and in the captain’s log, it was described that they had encountered a sailboat with the same characteristics as the Lady Lovibond, only that despite the maneuvering, there was no one on deck. The captain tried to follow him, but the ship slowly disappeared into the fog.

SS Baychimo

A cargo ship that worked efficiently for years, until in 1931 it was trapped in the ice of Alaska, being abandoned by its crew in the middle of a storm. When the weather cleared they wanted to return to the ship but it had disappeared.

Immediately it was considered sunken, however, sometime later rumors began to spread that it had been seen sailing along the coast of Alaska only to disappear again.

The last time the ship was seen was in 1969, almost four decades after the first disappearance.

Ryou-Un Maru

More recently, in the year 2012, a Japanese fishing vessel appeared on American territory. After traveling for an entire year allegedly without a crew. Because of the tsunami that hit Japan, the boat lost its way and ended up sailing and going around the world by itself.

And although the whereabouts of its crew have never been mentioned, if anyone was there at the time of the disaster, the ship was not ready for a supply boarding, and surely perished in the year adrift.

Which of these ghost ship stories did you find more interesting?
