Labyrinth Of Death: 12 Facts You Didn’t Know About The Paris Catacombs

Paris, capital of France, in which thousand of tourists each year visit the City of Light because of its landmarks, cuisine, parks and gardens, shop opportunities, art collections and such.

But the city also has fascinating but terrifying places underneath.

We are talking about the famous Paris Catacombs, underground ossuaries which hold the remains of more than six million people in a small part of a tunnel network built to consolidate Paris’ ancient stone quarries.

Here, we bring you 12 facts you probably didn’t know about these gloomy catacombs beneath one of the most visited cities in the world.

1. The ossuary was created as part of the effort to eliminate the city’s overflowing cemeteries. After a series of gruesome Saint Innocents-cemetery-quarter basement wall crumbled in 1774, there was an urgency to move the remains due to the serious health problems that it was causing and by 1786, the remains were transfered to a mine shaft opened near the Rue de la Tombe-Issoire.

2. The process of moving the remains from the cemeteries into the Catacombs took over 12 years to complete.

3. It’s basically a maze in the heart of underground Paris. It’s miles and miles of path. It’s considered dangerous to explore them alone since they are very dark and has lots of narrow passageways or tight tunnels.

4. The authorities have opened and curated parts of the catacombs for the public. But most of the parts are out of reach and it’s prohibited to go beyond that. Les Catacombs De Paris offers tours of the creepy maze that run a little less than a mile and takes from 45 minutes to an hour to explore, which leaves almost two hundred miles of tunnel systems out of limits inside the maze.

5. As mentioned before, the Catacombs are overflowed with the remains of millions of Parisians so it’s one giant underground burial system. The cave is actually deeper and longer than you ever imagined so there are many entry points into the Paris Catacombs. For years, people have shared to the world how to find them. However, that increased illegal foot traffic inside the uncharted paths of the underground ossuary.

6. Quarries were dug out where limestone was mined centuries before. So, much of the tunnels are flood with waist-deep water as they are exposed to natural cracks in the rocks and underground water systems.

7. When the remains were moved into the Catacombs, the bones were dumped in piles, completely disorganized. So, Louis- Étienne Héricart de Thury and his team, were in charge to stack femurs and skulls to form art walls. There’s also sculptures made by Francois Décure. He carved images of the Quartier De Cazerne, Port Philipe, and even the Port Mahon prison.

8. There lies the remains of remarkable people such as Charles Perrault, author of well-known stories like “Cinderella” and “The Sleeping Beauty” or French fabulist Jean de La Fontaine and painter Simon Vouet, among others.

9. There’s a cultivation of mushrooms into the Catacombs. As weird as it sounds, there are several stories about how this started but one says that deserters of Napoleon’s army hid there and somehow found that it was the perfect environment for growing mushrooms. This little secret spread along other farmers who started to do the same. This practice still exists today and produces mushrooms with an exceptional flavor.

11. The Catacombs have been used as a hideout, to throw some secret parties, heist and many more things.

Napoleon’s army used to hid over there as well as the French Resistance used the tunnels to organize and plan for attacks against the Nazis who also used them to place several bunkers.

The Catacombs were once used to pull off a nefarious heist not so long ago. Back in 2017, a group of thieves drilled through the limestone walls to steal a collection of vintage wine with a value of nearly $275,000.

There are also stories that claim King Charles X would throw secret parties in the tunnels when he was merely the Comte d’Artois as well as many musicians have held prohibited concerts halls for years.

Police even discovered a fully equipped cinema-cum-restaurant in a large and previously uncharted cavern back in 2004.

12. There’s a group of people known as cataphiles who like to spend their time inside the catacombs. They consider themselves as urban explorers and many murals and graffiti found underground were most likely made by them.

The Conjuring 3 Release Date Gets Delayed? What We Know So Far

If you are a horror lover, you most likely have watched the entire The Conjuring Universe and you are definitely ready to watch The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It soon. So here are everything we know about the upcoming movie before its release.

Also known as The Conjuring 3, it’s a supernatural horror film that will serve as a sequel to 2013’s The Conjuring and 2016’s The Conjuring 2, and as the eighth installment overall in the Conjuring Universe franchise.

Premise

The premise is based on the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, also known as the “Devil Made Me Do It” case. This is one of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with the story of David Glatzel, a young boy was possessed by a demon so the family summoned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren to assist him.

After performing exorcism on David, it is said that a demon fled the child’s body and took up residence within Johnson who later would remove the life of his landlord. His case marked the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense.

Cast

As for some of the main cast, Ruairi O’Connor will be playing Arne Cheyenne Johnson, Sarah Catherine Hook as Debbie Glatzel, Julian Hilliard as David Glatzel, and of course, Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will come back as paranormal researchers Lorraine and Ed Warren.

Production

Director Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona, 2019) was welcomed to work on this project after James Wan, who directed the previous two movies, stated that he wouldn’t be able to direct the film due to his commitments to other projects. However, Wan remained closely involved as producer.

According to THR Wan expressed in a statement about Chaves joining The Conjuring Universe, “While working closely with Chaves on ‘The Curse of La Llorona,’ I got to know him as a filmmaker. Chaves’ ability to bring emotion to a story, and his understanding of mood and scares, make him a perfect fit to direct the next Conjuring film. […] I’m excited to be back as producer and continue with Vera and Patrick on the next supernatural adventure of the Warrens.”

On the other hand, Chaves once expressed, “I am a huge fan of the Conjuring films. The movies are the rare combination that delivers both tremendous heart and awesome scares. It is both a total thrill and absolute honor to be working with James and the gang at New Line again”.

Release date

The film will be distributed by Warner Bros Pictures and New Line Cinema and while it is scheduled to premiere next September 11th, according to Variety, the horror film was delayed to June 4th, 2021 due to the spreading of coronavirus outbreak.

Most movie and television projects that were scheduled through this year, has been stopped or postponed since the global pandemic situation has brought the entire entertainment industry to a standstill.

While most sources are still counting on the movie to be released next month, it doesn’t even have an official trailer yet. So whether the release may actually get delayed -as reported- or not, the only thing to do is to wait for more information about its premiere.

While we are passing through difficult times as the virus pandemic is still ongoing, we have to keep distancing, better staying at home and stoping or postponing our life style, routines, everything.

Here’s a list of 7 videos of different attractions to watch from home that collect those emotions as if you were there to experience them.

Stranger Things

Back in 2018, Universal Studios made a Stranger Things maze for their annual Halloween Horror Nights event. It was based more in the second and third season of the Netflix’s series. Visitors face an encounter with Demogorgon and the hideous Mind Flayer and will give you some type of stress just by watching it.

Tower of Terror

The famous attraction located at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida, is an ultimate favorite. It is made for those who love suspense and nostalgia, as it is inspired by the series “The Twilight Zone”.

The story takes place in an old and abandoned hotel, in which five guests mysteriously disappeared inside an elevator during a stormy night in 1939. You’ll get on that elevator yourself to find out what happened.

As you ascend, the elevator just suddendly falls. It’s hard not to get excited with the feeling of falling down, fearing for your life.

The Conjuring

This maze is at Warner Bros. Studio Tour. It involves the participation of a guide who tells a story which is set and inspired by the Conjuring universe. You’ll explore and investigate the most famous paranormal cases while trying to escape the demonic spirits that are lurking in the shadows.

The Shining

Before the Stranger Things maze, Universal Studios had a The Shining maze at their Halloween Horror Nights back in 2017 which it was a terrifying experience based on the video. Every detail of the maze just matches with the scenarios in the movie, a blood-filled elevator, ghoulish twins, the horrifying bathroom scene, and there’s even a Jack Nicholson clone with an ax.

Waxworks

Knott’s Berry Farm is a theme park located in California. In 2019, a new maze called Waxworks was released which is a tour of the most horrible wax museum you have ever seen, mannequins and many actors ready to scare you.

In 2016, they had a maze walk-through named B340, which is about the psychotic mind of a man known as Samuel the Savage. The experience is described as, “Tight spaces, darkness mixed with flashing lights, and pulse-pounding noises would drive anyone to the brink of insanity”.

The Exorcist

Universal Studios has shown that they have the best theme mazes as each year they choose from different horror movies to recreate and get real scares out of you. At their Halloween Horror Nights in 2016, they decided that The Exorcist was the perfect movie to make one of the best mazes out there. Just see for yourself.

Hopefully, sooner or later everything will go back to normal to go to theaters and visit haunted house attractions just to fear.

Farewell From The Beyond! Creepy Video Shows A Body ‘Waving’ From Inside Coffin

A video posted on Youtube shows the creepy moment where a white coffin is being buried and the body´s hand can be seen waving through the glass panel.

The video shows a devastated family for their loss while a priest is reading his prayers during the burial service. A Youtube user mentioned that the priest is heard saying in Indonesian: “God has said in the book of John. I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me he will live even though he is dead.”

The camera suddenly zooms in on the coffin where a hand can be seen moving, as if waving or touching the lid behind the coffin glass.

No one seemed to notice at the time and the burial went ahead. The spooky video was filmed in the city of Manado in Indonesia on May 5 and sparked fears the victim may have been buried alive.

Despite the supernatural claims or the idea that the victim could still be alive, there’s also a logical explanation to consider. According to a recent research, a human body is able to move for more than a year after death.

A camera at the Australian Facility for Taphonomic Experimental Research (AFTER) took images of a corpse every 30 minutes during daylight hours. And for the entire duration, the body continued to move around.

The findings of this research project appeared in Forensic Science International: Synergy, and it could be important for forensic investigations in order to get essential information as the time or place of death at a crime scene.

The research was led by Alyson Wilson, who explained in an interview for the Agence France-Presse about their findings, “We think the movements relate to the process of decomposition, as the body mummifies and the ligaments dry out,”

However, that doesn’t mean it’s not creepy at all! Just watch for yourself.

First Trailer Of Upcoming Chucky TV Series Brings Back Childhood Fears!

If there’s one toy that we despised as kids and that got us all terrified, that would be Chucky.

“Child’s Play” is an American horror film created by Don Mancini, directed and co-written by Tom Holland and produced by Kirschner. It was released in 1988 about a serial killer named Charles Lee Ray, or “Chucky” who was mortally wounded after being shot in the chest by an officer. He performed a voodoo ritual to  transfer his soul into a “Good Guys” doll. He ends up with a boy named Andy as a birthday gift but needs to get his soul out of the doll before the transfer becomes permanent, and thus he tries everything to posses the little boy.

The film turned into a slasher franchise that comprises six sequels, a remake, comic books, a video game, tie-in merchandise and now, an upcoming television series is on its way.

Syfy announced at the Television Critics Association winter press tour that they had acquired the television rights to the films. The new Chucky series will have the perfect workteam consisting of producer David Kirschner (Hocus Pocus, Frailty), Brad Dourif (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Deadwood) to voice the character and Mancini himself.

They were involved in all original seven films which it’s more likely that the television series will keep Chucky’s touch since he has remained a fixture of the horror genre and he’s still going stronger after decades.

“The character Don and David created has terrified audiences for over 30 years,” said Chris McCumber, president of Entertainment Networks USA & Syfy for NBCUniversal. “The longevity and legacy of Chucky speaks to the creative storytelling and the loyal fans the film series has collected over the years. We are excited to once again partner with Nick and UCP on this new Syfy series, and are incredibly proud to bring Chucky to television for the first time with the original creators.”

Mancini told Syfy. “From film to film, I’ve always tried to create a different tone, plug Chucky into a different subgenre. We’ve gone from straightforward slasher to comedy to crazy satirical comedy and back to straightforward horror again.”

The official description for the series reads: “After a vintage Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, an idyllic American town is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town’s hypocrisies and secrets. Meanwhile, the arrival of enemies and allies from Chucky’s past threatens to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll’s untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster.”

Mancini also revealed to  SYFY WIRE, “With this TV show, our mission has been to preserve the straightforward scariness of the original film or the first couple of films. But at the same time, continue on with this ever-expanding tapestry of consistent story that we’ve spun over the course of seven movies and 30-some years. I think fans are really gonna love to see the new characters that we introduce into this realm and just to see how they came off of our classic characters. Not just Chucky, but some of the others that you may be hoping to see. There’s a good chance they may turn up.”

He continued, “It’s so important to give Chucky new weapons, new strategies, and new targets, new goals … Chucky has a different goal in the TV show than he’s ever had before, and it’s specifically something that is designed to evoke something that’s going on in the zeitgeist today.”

The series premieres on both SYFY and USA Network in 2021. You can see the first Chucky TV series trailer below.

A New Horror Anthology Series Just Hit On Netflix

“When night falls on this city, shadows and spirits come alive in this horror anthology series focused on urban legends”.

This is how Netflix describes this new horror anthology series from South Korea titled “Goedam” (Also known as “Ghost Story”).

The first season was released last August 20th with 8 episodes titled as followed: Crack, Destination, Special Guest,  Curiosity, Red Shoes, Dimension, Threshold, Birth. They have an average duration of 5-6 minutes each.

The series directed by Hong Won-ki, features ghost stories and urban legends, starring SEOLA, Song Chae-yun, Lee Hyun-joo, Han Ga-rim, Shim So-young.

The episodes are so short, it’ll take you less than an hour so you may want to watch them all-in-once. Likewise, the special effects, the acting and the stories are also very well done.

You may be or not familiar to some of the urban legends that are shown in “Goedam” but are easy to follow-up. The episodes tell stories such as the ghost of a young woman who stops a taxi, the elevator’s challenge which will take you to another dimension if you know the right combination of numbers, a talisman in a room that should not be removed to protect you from evil spirits and more.

All episodes are entertaining and not a single one really falls through and since the episodes don’t last that long, it’s a good option if you are looking for something scary to watch at any moment.

Hopefully, Netflix will bet on a second season to share some more urban legends and ghost stories.

As for now, you really should watch this new addition!

‘The Exorcist’ Reboot Is Reportedly Coming In 2021

It’s time to take out your holy water and crucifix because in a recent Deadline article was mentioned that a reboot of William Friedkin’s 1973 horror classic ‘The Exorcist’ is being developed for the big screen.

Despite the casual mention, Morgan Creek Entertainment is said to be working on a new film adaptation of the iconic franchise and it may premiere in 2021.

Five years ago, the company claimed via Twitter that they will never remake The Exorcist.

However, it’s been described as a ‘reboot’ and not a remake, which may imply that it will have a direct narrative connection to the original film instead.

The Exorcist was inspired by American writer William Peter Blatty’s novel. The 1973 film was starred by Linda Blair as Regan MacNeil, a young girl who is possessed by the demon Pazuzu. The film also includes Ellen Burstyn as Regan’s mother, Jason Miller as Father Karras and Max von Sydow as Father Merrin.

It was the highest-grossing R-rated horror film for a long time. The cult film became one of the greatest horror films of all time. It received such critical acclaim that helped the film to be ten times nominated for the Oscars, winning for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound Mixing. It was the first horror film to be nominated for the Academy Awards for Best Picture.

The Exorcist has had a significant influence on popular culture ever since. There were four more movies after the original’s success: The Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977), The Exorcist III (1990), The Exorcist: The Beginning (2004) and Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist (2005).

More recently, Fox made a television series as a sequel to the original film in 2016 which was starred by Alfonso Herrera, Ben Daniels, Brianne Howey, Geena Davis, Hannah Kasulka and Brianna Hildebrand. However after two seasons, it got canceled.

The television series was overall well-received, yet the new film will face a complicated scenario considering that the spin-offs and prequels didn’t achieved such success as the original, but we’ll have to wait for this new upcoming adaptation to say otherwise.

At the moment, there’s still not much information about the possible cast or the director that will take on this great challenge.

‘The Haunting Of Hill House’ Director Will Be Working To Turn Stephen King’s Novel Into A Movie

Stephen King is not only one of the biggest horror writers in the history, but most of his works have been adapted into films, television series, miniseries, and comic books. His high standing in pop culture let us know that there is still a lot of material to adapt for those who enjoy his fearful stories jumping out from the pages of his books, up to the screens.

HBO recently adapted The Outsider (2018), to create one of the best horror series of the year. The novel tells the story of a murder that turns out to be much murky than it seemed. It’s considered by many to be one of King’s best new novels.

This time, his novel Revival (2014) is the one getting a movie. It is set in a small New England town and spans around five decades where a charismatic minister meets Jamie, a small boy that was playing with his toy soldiers.

Suddenly, a tragedy hits the boy’s family while the preacher mocks all religious belief and ends up being exiled. After a while, the boy becomes a musical nomad and an addict and meets the preacher again. But this time, they’ll face huge consequences.

According to Variety,  Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy who teamed up on the 2019 adaptation of King’s “Doctor Sleep”, will be working together again for the upcoming project. While Flanagan will be in charge of the script and direction, Macy will produce through Intrepid Pictures.

King’s horror novel received positive reviews, with many critics noting the book’s nods to classics of the horror genre, such as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Arthur Machen’s The Great God Pan, and the cosmic-horror of H. P. Lovecraft.

Mike Flanagan is one of the best horror directors right now after Netflix’s ‘The Haunting of Hill House‘ series turned out as a massive success and that makes us believe that Revival could become another great adaptation.

According to Flanagan, the script will keep the “bleak and mean” approach to Revival, especially the novel’s disturbing ending.

He appeared on the Kingcast podcast to reveal how much “fun” he’s having with this new project. “It is relentlessly dark and cynical and I’m enjoying the hell out of that.”

He even confirmed that the first screenplay draft is complete and has King’s approval. “What I love about it is it’s a return to cosmic horror, which I think is so fun,” he explained.

As for King’s followers, they will be able to enjoy another piece of work turn into an adaptation. However, details about the filming, the cast or the releasing date are yet to be revealed.
